COMC Office Pack Battle League Season Recap

pack battle

After 18 grueling weeks, our inaugural COMC Office Pack Battle League season has come to an end! Over four months ago, our 20 employees embarked on a hybrid fantasy sports meets wax busting experiment for fun and bragging rights, and needless to say, everyone involved greatly enjoyed this maiden voyage. Let’s take a look at our final league standings, shall we?

No real surprise here as Kevin started to pull away from the pack with several weeks left to play. Kevin’s 50 points (19 from HR, 18 from hits, 13 from strike outs) was a league best by 11 points, putting him more than a three-category sweep away from second place. Steve finishes behind him in second place as our runner up, improving his standing from 5th to 2nd in the final four weeks of play. James takes home the bronze trophy with 35 point, with 23 of those points coming from the HR category!

Now let’s move on to our Stat King winners…

Home Run King WinnerJames – 23 points

With 23 of his 35 league points, James managed to overpower the competition en route to the Home Run King title. James took an early season lead in the category and heavily leaned his team toward that category, consistently trading away top tier pitching for elite power hitters. Kevin and Bob finished tied for second in the category with 19 points a piece, with Bryson, Sean, and Jeff each sitting at 17 points.

Hit King Winner:

Kevin – 18 points

Kevin picked up the ‘W’ as our Hit King winner with 18 total points. Despite his huge dominance in the overall league standings, he only managed to take hits by three points over the second place Angela. Kevin was our only manager to finish in the top three in all three categories, meaning he fielded a well-rounded team all season long, opting not to lean his team towards one particular stat. Bob rounded out the top three in hits with 12 points.

Strikeout King Winner:

Steve – 19 points

Comeback complete! In the most exciting of the three categories, Steve was able to cap-off an epic comeback and win the Strike Out King title by accumulating 19 total points, with his final five points coming in the last two weeks of the season. Those five points propelled him ahead of Jeremy (15) and Kevin (13) to round out our stat king winners.

In Conclusion…

Thanks to everyone for following along at home! We had a great time testing out and learning this new fantasy meets collecting format, and we’re currently looking at how we can apply it to the upcoming NFL season. Is that a sign of things to come for the COMC Blog? We’ll see…..

COMC Office Pack Battle League Update #8

pack battle

Introduction

We’re now through 16 of the 18 weeks in our inaugural Office Pack Battle League! There are just two weeks left until we announce the overall winner as well as the winners of our three respective stat categories. Be on the lookout for that update in a couple of weeks!

Current Standings

The rich only managed to get a little richer this time around, as league leader Kevin only added two points to his total over the last two weeks. The same goes for James, who lost ground to Sean over the last three weeks to round out our top three. Steve’s five points earned over weeks 15 & 16 were good enough to bump him up one spot in the standings, while Jade made the biggest leap of all with his eight points, catapulting him from 11th to the the five spot.

Home Run King Standings:

In our Home Run King category, James maintained his four point lead over the field and can clinch the category win by accumulating just three points over the final two weeks of the season. Bryson, Sean, Kevin and Jeff all sit behind him at 17 points a piece, meaning one of these managers will need to accumulate second place or better points in both weeks to tie or overtake the lead.

Hit King Standings:

In the Hit King category, Kevin’s 15 points are good enough to lead the category, but may not be good enough to win the category. With Angela at 12 points, James at 11 points, and Brandon, Sean and Jade each with 10 points, these managers are not completely out of the running to win the category. While Kevin controls his own destiny, this one is far from over.

Strikeout King Standings:

In recent weeks, Steve had made an impressive run to overtake Jeremy, but with back-to-back wins, Jeremy is leading the Strikeout King category with 15 points. Steve is right behind him at 14 points and will look to answer back over the course of the final two weeks. Kevin’s 13 points keep him within striking distance of the top spot. This race is effectively down to those three, as only one other manager could reach the 15 point mark, but would need to earn top points in back-to-back weeks to do so.

Week 15 Results (July 5th – 11th)

Jade’s five home runs on the bats of J.D. Martinez (2) and Jose Ramirez (3) were enough to earn him top points in the home run category. Chris’ superstar combo of Andrew Benintendi (14) and Paul Goldschmidt (10) was able to bang out 24 hits and secure three points for him. In the first of his back-to-back strikeout wins, Jeremy’s 1-2 punch of Chris Sale (12) and Justin Verlander (10) proved too potent to be touched.

HR Points: Jade (3), Jeff (2), Kevin (1), Angela (1), James (1)
Hits Points: Chris (3), Bob (2), Dieter (2), Dylan (1), Tim (1), Jade (1)
K’s Points: Jeremy (3), Dieter (2), Jade (1), Dylan (1)

Week 16 Results (July 12th-25th)

In an extended week due to the All Star Game break, Khris Davis was able to put up the highest home run total we’ve seen so far with six bombs. His six plus Joey Gallo‘s four dingers gave Jeff a dominate win for the week. Sean put up a ridiculous 27 hit performance with Joe Mauer (15) and Jonathan Schoop (12) leading him to first place points. Jeremy was able to notch his second win in as many weeks thanks to Astros teammates Justin Verlander (12) and Gerrit Cole (8).

HR Points:  Jeff (3), Jade (2), Sean (1), Steve (1), Kevin (1), Chris (1), Angela (1)
Hits Points:  Sean (3), Steve (2), Angela (1), James (1)
K’s Points:  Jeremy (3), Steve (2), Chris (1), Jade (1)

That’s going to do it for our update this week. Be sure to come back in just a couple weeks for our league wrap up where we announce our winners!

COMC Office Pack Battle League Update #7

pack battle

Introduction

Welcome to the seventh and second-to-last update before we announce winners in our ongoing COMC Office Pack Battle League! We’re now through 14 weeks of the season and have just four weeks remaining! To see how we got this far, click here to read past updates to get caught up on how this crazy game we’ve concocted is played and how you can start up your own Pack Battle League!

Current Standings

In the overall league standings, Kevin managed to add six points to his total over the last two weeks, putting him now twelve points ahead of second place. While anything can happen, one of the 2nd – 5th place managers would need to run nearly perfect and score top points in all categories amidst a complete Kevin collapse. James holds onto a three point lead over 3rd – 5th, while the rest of the field from 6th-10th remain tightly packed together, hoping for a final push into the top five. Jeff had the largest jump since our last update, as his six points earned were good enough to help him find his way into 10th place.

Home Run King Standings:

James leads the Home Run King standings overall with 20 points. He’ll look to stack his team heavily towards power for the final four weeks of the season. With five points earned over the last two weeks, Bryson leapfrogged the field to sit in 2nd place with 17 points. Tad and Sean are amidst a battle for 3rd with 16 points, while Kevin sits in 5th with 15 points.

Hit King Standings:

Kevin’s 15 points give him a comfortable four-point lead in the Hit King Standings. Angela is the closest rival and sits in 2nd with 11 points after earning four points in back-to-back second place performances. James and Brandon’s 10-points represent a tie for 3rd, while Jeff and Jade’s 9 points are good for a 5th place tie. Anything can happen in the final two weeks, and this category will come down to the wire.

Strikeout King Standings:

By far the most exciting points category, Kevin maintains a one-point lead over Steve with his 13 overall points. Jeremy falls behind the competition and sits in 3rd with 9 points after failing to add to once league leading 9-points.

We’ve seen some crazy occurrences in the strike outs category as we reach the midway point of the MLB season. An unlikely victory for Steve that you’ll read about below will have him heavily skewing his team towards pitching. On the other hand, Kevin remains in competition for top spots in all three categories, meaning he’ll have to field a well-rounded team these final two weeks.

Week 13 Results (June 21st – 27th)

On the bats of Nolan Arenado and J.D. Martinez, Bryson’s team was able to blast 6 home runs, earning top points in the category. The rest of the field bunched up, awarding 2nd and 3rd place points to three managers each respectively. Kevin pads his overall points lead AND his lead in the Hit King category with his 19 hits on the unlikely combo of Matt Carpenter and Yuliesky Gurriel. 22 Strikeouts from Jack Flaherty (13) and Max Scherzer (9) were good enough for Chris to notch top points for the week.

HR Points: Bryson (3), Geoff (2), James (2), Jeff (2), Tim (2), Bob (1), Kevin (1), Sean (1)
Hits Points:  Kevin (3), Angela (2), Jeff (1), Steve (1)
K’s Points: Chris (3), Tad (2), Jade (1), Geoff (1)

Week 14 Results (June 28th -July 4th)

Steve put up a huge five spot thanks to the five home runs of Nolan Arenado and Mike Trout earning him 2nd place HR points, as well as coy decision to play two Robbie Ray cards at his pitcher spots. Ray’s 7 strikeouts doubled were enough to secure first place points. Bryson followed up his first place HR win last week with a second place performance from the bats of Nelson Cruz and Eric Thames.

HR Points:  Jeff (3), Steve (2), Bryson (2), Jade (2), Chris (1), Brian (1)
Hits Points: David (3), Angela (2), Jade (1)
K’s Points: Steve (3), Kevin (2), Angela (1)

In our next update, we’ll break down all of the final league standings for the season. While the runaway winner Kevin likely has the overall points total on lock down, all three individual category trophies are still up in the air. Who will win? How will it all shake down? See you in two weeks!

COMC Office Pack Battle League Update #6

pack battle

Introduction

With just four weeks left in the season, Managers are jockeying for position as they look to improve their overall league standings OR stack their roster towards one particular stat to maintain a lead or gain ground in the individual stat standings. Over the last two weeks, the rich have gotten richer while one Manager made a strong push towards the Top 5.

If you’re not familiar with our scoring system or the rules of our league, you can read our introductory blog here. If you’ve missed some updates and want to catch up on how we got to our current standings, you can read all pack battle league updates here.

Current Standings

In overall league standings, Kevin’s eight points over the last two weeks helped pad his healthy lead over the field. James slides into second with a five point performance. Sean and Brandon enter a tie at the third and fourth place while Jeremy hit a mid season slump and falls one spot to round out the top 5. Tad’s seven point performance catapulted him up the standings from 12th to 7th, placing him just outside of the Top 5. He’ll look to continue the impressive run and muscle his way into the Top 5 over the final four weeks of the season.

Home Run King Standings:

With back-to-back second place points showings in weeks 11 & 12, Tad has positioned himself in 2nd place with 16 points just behind James’s leading 18 points. Sean sits in the three spot with 15 points, and three others are tied at 14 to round out the top five.

Hit King Standings:

Despite having an excellent showing over the last two weeks, Kevin was not able to add to his league leading 12 points in the Hit King Standings. Brandon also stood pat with 10 points, still good for a tie for second with James. Both remain within striking distance of overtaking the lead. Rounding out the top five is Jeff and Jade, who are each tied with 8 after adding three points to their totals..

Strikeout King Standings:

Kevin’s back-to-back wins in Weeks 11 & 12 meant that he leapfrogs the field and sits atop the Strikeout King leader board with 11 points. Jeremy sits just two points behind him, while Steve, Dylan and Brian are all tied with 8 points a piece.

Strikeouts remain a hot commodity to pull from our 2018 Topps Opening Day packs, and the Managers gunning to take down the Strikeout King category are in trade mode as they look to stack their team with strikeout pitchers at the cost of premium hitters.

Week 11 Results (June 7th – 13th)

Tad pulls off the trifecta in week 11, gaining five points across the three categories thanks to a team consisting of Freddie Freeman, Didi Gregorius, Yuli Gurriel, Xander Bogaerts, Luis Severino, and Danny Duffy. Steve potent combo of California bombers Mike Trout and Khris Davis smashed eight home runs, earning him top honors. Whit Merrifield and Jose Altuve‘s 17 combine hits were good enough to earn him first place in the hits column. Kevin continues his impressive run by nabbing first place points in strikeouts with 19 K’s on the arms of Gerrit Cole and Carlos Carrasco.

HR Points: Steve (3), Tad (2), Bob (2), Sean (1), Dieter (1)
Hits Points: Chris (3), Grant (2), Tad (2), James (1), Jeff (1), Dieter (1),
K’s Points: Kevin (3), Geoff (2), Chris (2), Tad (1)

Week 12 Results (June 14th – 20th)

Home runs came at a premium this week as just three home runs were good enough for first-place points. With the bar so low, 13 of our Managers were able to nab points in the category. Jade (Eddie Rosario, Paul Goldschmidt) and James (Nolan Arenado, Carlos Correa) mustered up 18 hits a piece to tie for first place points in hits. Kevin piled onto his league leading points total and overtook the Strike Out Kings lead on the 18 combined strike outs of Julio Teheran and Sonny Gray.

HR Points: Bob (3), David (3), Bryson (3), Sean (3), Kevin (2), Tim (2), Tad (2), James (2), Chris (1), Steve (1), Jeremy (1), Dylan (1), Brandon (1)
Hits Points: Jade (3), James (3), Jeff (2), Sean (2), Grant (1)
K’s Points: Kevin (3), Brian (2), Jade (1)

We have just two updates left until the conclusion of our inaugural Pack Battle League. We’ll be back in a couple of weeks to break down all of the week 13 & 14 action!

COMC Office Pack Battle League Update #5

pack battle

Introduction

With 10 weeks out of our 18 week season in the books, we are careening towards the finish line of our COMC Office Pack Battle League! Over the last two weeks the rich have continued to get richer, while a couple hopeful Managers have made a run at breaking out of the pack and into the upper echelons of the standings.

If you’re not familiar with our scoring system or the rules of our league, you can read our introductory blog here. If you’ve missed some updates and want to catch up on how we got to our current standings, you can read all pack battle league updates here.

Current Standings

In the overall league standings through 10 weeks, Kevin is currently pacing the field with 29 points, adding five to his total from our previous update. Brandon’s seven points over the last two weeks was good enough to move him up two spots to second. James was only able to add one point to his total, and Jeremy’s five points moved him up a slot for a tie at 3rd and 4th place. Rounding out our top five is Sean who falls two spots from our last update.

Brian’s seven points over the last two weeks leapfrogged him from 16th place all the way to 8th. Dylan has also been on the move over the last two weeks, moving from the 11th to the 7th spot on a 6 point performance.

While 10th – 17th place are only separated by 3 points, the climb up the ladder is starting to get steeper and steeper as the top five continue to separate themselves from the pack.

Home Run King Standings:

Having cooled off substantially, James was only able to add a single point to his lead in the Home Run King standings. He sits three points ahead of Brandon(13 pts), who has a one point lead over Tad and Kevin. Sean rounds out the top 5 with 11 points.

Hit King Standings:

Kevin and Brandon swapped wins in the Hits category over the last two weeks to keep pace with one another in the standings. Kevin leads overall with 12 points, with Brandon just two points behind. Angela and Bob sit in a tie for 3rd-4th with seven points.

Strikeout King Standings:

It took ten weeks, but a trend finally emerged in the Strike Out Kings standings as Jeremy was able hold on to the top spot by notching a Week 9 win in the category. He sits in first with nine points, with Dylan and Steve close behind at eight points. Tim and Brian are in striking distance at six points.

Strikeouts remain the most competitive category by far, and will certainly be the race to watch down the stretch. Like a win in FirstEnergy Stadium (Have fun Googling that!), fielding a competitive pitching staff remains a difficulty for some Managers.  It should be interesting to see if Manager’s start trading to focus specifically on strike outs in coming weeks.

Week 9 Results (May 24th-30th )

To absolutely no one’s surprise, Brandon was able to dominate the HR category with the 1-2 super combo of Mike Trout and Bryce Harper. Seven Managers managed to put just one home run or less this week, so there was a serious power outage. Kevin rode the bats of Buster Posey and Jose Altuve to an easy win in the hits category. Geoff was able to tie Kevin on the interesting combo of Salvador Perez and Adam Jones. Strikeouts belonged to Jeremy thanks to Stephen Strasburg‘s 8 K’s and Aaron Nola‘s 10 K performance.

HR Points:  Brandon (3), Geoff (3), Bob (2), Jeff (1), Sean (1)
Hits Points: Kevin (3), Geoff (2), Jeff (2), Brandon (1)
K’s Points:  Jeremy (3), Steve (2), Tim (1)

Week 10 Results (May 31st – June 6th)

You get points, you get points, EVERYONE gets points! In our HR category, 17 of the 20 managers were able to notch at least third place points thanks to a log jam in the category. Just two homers was good enough to net 3rd place points.  Angela (Giancarlo Stanton, Jose Ramirez), Brian (Cody Bellinger, Edwin Encarnacion), and Grant (Manny Machado, Andrew Benintendi) led the field with 5 HR’s each. In the hits category, Brandon (Andrew Benintendi, Brandon Crawford) and Bob (Brandon Crawford, Matt Kemp) tied at the top with 18 hits a piece. Finally, in strikeouts, Dylan scorched the competition with both Nat’s aces Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg.

HR Points:  Angela (3), Brian (3), Grant (3), Jeff (2), Bryson (2), Dylan (2), Dieter (2), David (1), James (1), Sean (1), Steve (1), Tim (1), Kevin (1), Chris (1), Jeremy (1), Bob (1), Tad (1)
Hits Points: Brandon (3), Bob (3), Brian (2), Angela (1), Dylan (1), Jeremy (1), Chris (1), Kevin (1)
K’s Points: Dylan (3), Brian (1), Tad (1)

That’s going to do it for this week’s update. We’ll be back in two weeks to break down weeks 11 &12. With Topps Series 2 Baseball releasing later this week, now is the perfect time to get a league started with your friends or coworkers!

COMC Office Pack Battle League Update #4

pack battle

Introduction

Not wanting to risk losing his auto, Dieter sadly did not play this card.

Welcome to our fourth COMC Office Pack Battle League Update. We’ve now concluded eight weeks of our 18-week season, and trends are starting to take form. There is still a lot of baseball left to play, so nothing is set in stone, and comebacks will surely happen. We’ve seen Managers go on some pretty incredible runs up the league standings as a result of smart decision making when setting their line up. With trading always a possibility, we expect to see more teams look for trade partners to start heavily skewing their line ups towards individual categories.

If you’re not familiar with our scoring system or the rules of our league, you can read our introductory blog here. If you’ve missed some updates and want to catch up on how we got to our current standings, you can read all pack battle league updates here.

For the second time this season, one of our League Managers has pulled an auto out of our case of 2018 Topps Opening Day! This time it was Dieter who hit this minty fresh Noah Syndergaard auto.

Current Standings

In the overall league standings through eight weeks, Kevin has regained the top spot with an impressive 10 point gain over the last two weeks. James moves up two spots with an equal 10 point gain, while former leader Sean falls to the three spot in a tie with Brandon, who’s nine point performance moved him four spots up the league standings. Jeremy drops two spots to round out our top 5.

Four weeks ago, Bryson sat dead last with just two points, but he has caught fire and sits in 7th after snagging 12 point over the course of the last few weeks of play. With just a four point difference between 9th and 18th place, competition in the middle of the pack should be getting very interesting as new contenders emerge.

Home Run King Standings:

With back-to-back wins in the Home Run category, James has increased his lead over the rest of the field and sits with 15 points. Kevin and Tad remain close behind at 11 points each, but sit more than a week’s worth of points behind.

Hit King Standings:

Kevin came out the winner of his tie with Jade for the lead in the Hit King category with his week 7 1st place points performance. Angela and Brandon now sit in second place with six points each after each notched three point top performances over the last two weeks.

Strikeout King Standings:

Pitchers continue to come at a premium out of our packs of Opening Day, and as a result the Strike Out King trophy is still anyone’s to win. Steve and Jeremy sit in first with six point each, but five other managers (Dylan, Sean, Grant, Tim and & Kevin) are tied for second just one point away from the lead.

Week 7 Results (May 10th-16th )

Four teams tied for top points in home runs this week at five home runs each, with two of these teams flourishing thanks to Manny Machado‘s three-day power flurry that produced four home runs. Kevin and Angela tied for 1st in hits at 18 each, with Kevin platooning Ozzie Albies and Nick Markakis while Angela opted for Freddie Freeman and Brian Anderson. Kevin capped off his eight point week with top points in the K’s category as the 1-2 Washington Nationals punch of Stephen Strasburg (9) and Max Scherzer (11) were only rivaled by the equal 20 K’s of Chris Sale (15) and Jake Arrieta (5) for Steve. In a rare feat, James notched points in each of the three categories, the first to do so since Sean’s triple 3rd place performance in week 4.

HR Points:  James (3), Tad (3), Bryson (3), Brandon (3), Dylan (2), Kevin (2), Sean (2), Grant (2), Jeremy (1)
Hits Points: Kevin (3), Angela (3), Jeremy (2), Bob (2), Tim (2), Sean (2), Steve (2), Steve (1), James (1), Brandon (1), Bryson (1)
K’s Points: Steve (3), Kevin (3), Jade (2), James (1)

Week 8 Results (May 17th – 23rd)

As the rest of the world outside of Boston is realizing that Mookie Betts is the real deal, our League Managers are being rewarded by his dual threat potential in our Pack Battle League. Mookie and Jonathan Schoop helped carry James’ team to first place points in the HR category for the third straight weeks. Seven teams were able to notch second place points in the HR category with three home runs each. Brandon’s combo of Betts and Odubel Herrera yielded 18 hits, good for first place points. Steve puts up back-to-back wins in the K’s category as Max Scherzer (13) and Jon Lester (8) were able to get the job done with 21 K’s.

For a second straight week, we see a League Manager acquire points in all three categories, as Dylan’s 2nd and two 3rd place finishes make him the third manager to do so.

HR Points:  James (3), Geoff (3), Tad (2), Brian (2), Jade (2), Jeremy (2), Chris (2), Bryson (2), Kevin (2), Brandon (2), David (1), Dylan (1), Tim (1)
Hits Points: Brandon (3), Dylan (2), James (2), Bryson (1), Steve (1)
K’s Points: Steve (3), Dylan (2), Angela (1)

COMC Office Pack Battle League Update #3

pack battle

Introduction

The COMC Office Pack Battle League is now 1/3rd of the way through it’s inaugural season and we’ve had a major shake up in the standings! With six weeks down and 12 weeks to go, a lot has happened over the last two weeks!

If you’re not familiar with our scoring system or the rules of our league, you can read our introductory blog here. If you’ve missed some updates and want to catch up on how we got to our current standings, you can read all pack battle league updates here.

Gerrit Cole continues to be the runaway MVP of 2018 Topps Opening Day, claiming his 3rd appearance in six weeks atop the strikeout leader board.

Current Standings

In the overall league standings through six weeks, Sean made a huge run from 13th all the way to the top spot, adding 9 points to his total over the last two weeks. While the middle of the pack is 7th through 15th is only separated by 3 points, the top of the leader board is beginning to define itself a little clearer. Jade, James and Bryson also put up strong efforts of five points each, substantially improving their positions on the leader board.

Home Run King Standings:

James came out the winner of a four-way tie at the top of the Home Run King standings with a third place performance in Week 5 and a first place tie in week 6.  He now leads the field with 9 points, with Kevin and Sean close behind at 7.

Hit King Standings:

Kevin and Jade sit a top the Hit King leader board with five points each. The rest of the field is tightly behind them, as 10 teams are currently sitting at three points. Any of those teams can claim the top spot with a strong showing.

Strikeout King Standings:

Jeremy came out the victor in our previous tie at the top, claiming the top spot in overall strikeout points with six. With four teams on his heels  at five points, strikeouts has been one of the most exciting categories to watch as the season progresses. League Managers have found pitchers found in 2018 Topps Opening Day to be somewhat polarizing. Cards like Gerrit Cole, Corey Kluber, and Max Scherzer can single handedly carry a team to points in this column. Not pulling one of these players from their weekly two packs can often spell a middle of the road performance.

Week 5 Results (April 26th  – May 2nd )

Sean began his run to the top in week 5, fielding a team of Aaron Judge (hr), Wil Myers (hr), Joe Mauer (hits), Francisco Lindor (hits), Gerrit Cole (K’s) and Sean Manaea (K’s). With Lindor exploding for 12 hits, and Cole doing what he does and leading the week in strikeouts, Sean was able to add five points to his total. Brian took HR category for the week with the duo of Gary Sanchez (3) and Nelson Cruz (2) hitting a combine five homers.

HR Points:  Brian (3), Steve (2), James (1), Angela (1), Kevin (1)
Hits Points: Dylan (2), Sean (2), James (1)
K’s Points: Sean (3), Grant (2), Jade (1), Dieter (1), Angela (1), Brian (1)

Week 6 Results (May 3rd – 9th)

It was a clean sweep for Texas state players on our player of the week board, as Nomar Mazara came out of nowhere to put up the best HR week we’ve seen so far. George Springer‘s six-hit performance catapulted him to a 15-hit performance and Gerrit Cole remained untouchable in an Astros uniform.

While hits and k’s were pretty cut and dry categories, with Jade taking hits with 28 total thanks to Springer and Lindor and Bryson taking K’s with 25 total on the arms of Carlos Carrasco (14) and Luis Severino (11). The home runs category produced three teams earning top points with five home runs each, while six teams nabbed 3rd place points with three homers each.

HR Points:  James (3), Sean (3), Kevin (3), Jeremy (2), Bob (1), Jade (1), Tad (1), Jeff (1), David (1), Grant (1)
Hits Points: Jade (3), Bryson (2), Angela (1)
K’s Points: Bryson (3), Jeremy (2), Tim (1)

Whew, that was a crazy two weeks. That’s going to do it for this time around for the Pack Battle League. We’ll be back in two weeks to break down all the Week 7 & 8 action.

COMC Office Pack Battle League Update #2

pack battle

Introduction

The COMC Office Pack Battle League is now four weeks into it’s inaugural season and trends are starting to take form. Of course, it’s still very early in the season, and no team is too far out of the hunt to be counted out.

If you’re not familiar with our scoring system or the rules of our league, you can read our introductory blog here. If you missed our first update and want to take a look at how things got underway through the first two weeks of the season click here.

A big congratulations to Sean Manaea for his 10-strikeout no hit performance against the Boston Red Sox in Week 4!

Current Standings

standingsweek2In the overall league standings through four weeks, Bob has emerged as the front-runner with 10 total points. Over the past two weeks, he’s secured 8 points and has leapfrogged the field after sitting in 17th place after the first two weeks of the season. The rest of the field remains tightly packed, with only three points separating 10th place from 1st place.

Home Run King Standings:

No clear leader has emerged in the Home Run King standings as a four-way tie exists at the top with Brandon, James, Bob and Tad each with five points. Bob took the ‘w’ in the HR category in week 3 with six home runs and Tad claimed top honors in week 4 with five homers.

Hit King Standings:

Despite adding no points from the hits category over the past two weeks, Kevin’s fast start with five points through the first two weeks was enough to keep him in the lead. The field is tightly closing in however as David sits in second with four points. Four teams tied with 13 hits each in week 3 to claim 1st place points while Jeff took the victory in hits in week 4 with a whopping 21 hits.

Strikeout King Standings:

Our five-way tie from the previous update has become just a two-way tie as Tim and Jeremy top the leader board with four points each. Dylan blazed past the competition in week 3 with 23 strike outs, while Bob followed up in week 4 with an 18-strikeout performance that was good for the top spot.

In week 3 action, Bob begun his march to the top of the leader board by scoring top points in the home run category with six home runs with his high risk high reward decision to play two Charlie Blackmon cards in the home run stat. A four-way tie at hits this week at 13 total hits yielded first place points distributed liberally. Dylan’s 23 strike outs from Gerrit Cole and Julio Teheran were enough to cement a strong first place finish.

HR Points:  Bob (3), Sean (2), Jeff (1), David (1), Kevin (1), Jade (1)
Hits Points: Jeremy (3), Geoff (3), Tim (3), David (3), Dieter (2), Angela (2), Tad (2), Chris (1)

Bob followed up his three-point week 3 with a five point week 4 effort. Bob took first in Strikeouts with 18 K’s thanks to Gerrit Cole (is that name looking familiar yet?) and Sean Manaea and put up a second-place effort in hits coming just three hits short of the 21 hits acquired by category winner Jeff. Tad reigned supreme in the home run category with 5 on the bats of second-year studs Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger.

HR Points:  Tad (3), James (2), Brandon (2), Dylan (1), David (1), Sean (1), Jeff (1), Kevin (1)

That will do it for this update. Our next update will come in two weeks where we’ll break down the week 5 & 6 action in the COMC Office Pack Battle League.

COMC Office Pack Battle League Update #1

Introduction

Our case yielded a 1:93,600 packs mascot auto relic pulled by Tad.

Last month, we introduced our COMC Office Pack Battle League concept, structure and scoring system. If you’d like to revisit that blog to learn more about our league click here. Our league roster has been finalized with 20 teams in the hunt over the course of our 18-week season. Each week runs from Thursday through the following Wednesday, with each League Manager choosing 4 batters (2 for the hits category, 2 for the home runs category) and 2 pitchers for the strikeouts category using only cards found in their two packs opened for the week.

With two weeks in the books and each team opening just two packs a week to set their roster, our 20 teams has collectively opened just 2 boxes and 8 packs out of the 20-box case of 2018 Topps Opening Day that packs are being pulled from. Team Manager and COMC Processing Team Member Tad P. crushed the odds by hitting a 1:93,600 packs Billy the Marlin Mascot Autographed Relic card.

Current Standings

In the overall league standings, we currently have a three-way tie between Kevin, Grant and Brandon with seven total points each. Jeremy and James round out the top five each with five points, while 6th-12th place remain tightly bunched up in the season’s infancy. All twenty teams are on the board with points just two weeks into the season.

Home Run King Standings:

Brandon, Jade, Steve and James lead the home run leader boards each with three points in the category. James and Brandon tied for 1st place in week 1 each with six round trippers. Jade took top honors in week two with Mike Moustakas and J.D. Martinez each hitting two homers.

Hit King Standings:

Kevin has a firm lead on first place in the hits leader board with five points after winning the category in week one with 19 hits and following it up with a 2nd place finish in week 2 with 14 hits. Grant took top honors in week 2 with his 15-hit combination of Jose Altuve (6) and Kris Bryant (9).

Strikeout King Standing:

A five-way tie between Brandon, Tim, Grant, Jeremy and Jeff currently exists through the first two weeks of the season. The record for most strikeouts in a week currently belongs to Brandon’s week 2 combination of Yu Darvish and Corey Kluber who notched a combined 22 k’s.

Week 1 Results (March 29th – April 4th)

Excited to get underway, our Managers had their teams set and ready and go for Opening Day! In the home runs category, James and Brandon tied for top honors with six homers each, with Bryce Harper anchoring their respective teams. Kevin dominated the hits category with 19 hits (Paul Dejong 10 hits, Dee Gordon 9 hits). Grant, Jeremy and Jeff led the pack each with 17 strikeouts, enough to earn each team three-points.

HR Points: James (3), Brandon (3), Tad (2), Steve (1), David (1), Brian (1)
Hits Points: Kevin (3), James (2), Steve (1), Brandon (1)
K’s Points: Grant (3), Jeremy (3), Jeff (3), Kevin (2), Angela (2), Tim (1), David (1)

Week 2 Results (April 5th – 11th)

Jade squeaked out a win over a tightly packed field in the home runs stat with four on the week. A six-way tie for 2nd place at three home runs and seven more teams tying for 3rd with 2 home runs meant that 14 teams earned points in the HR category this week. Hit was a little more clear cut, with Grant’s 15 hits being enough to earn 1st place points, besting Kevin’s 14 hits and denying him back-to-back wins in the category. Brandon dominated the field with 22 strike outs, five more than 2nd place.

HR Points: Jade (3), Jeremy (2), Geoff (2), Dieter (2), Steve (2), Bryson (2), Bob (2), Grant (1), Chris (1), Dylan (1), Brian (1), Jeff (1), David (1), Tim (1)
Hits Points: Grant (3), Kevin (2), Dieter (1), David (1)
K’s Points: Brandon (3), Tim (2), Geoff (1), Sean (1)

Let’s Play Ball: 2018 COMC Baseball Pack League Introduction

2018 Topps Opening Day is our set o choice for Pack League!

If it wasn’t apparent already – we are crazy about cards! Our employees come from a wide array of backgrounds in cards and collectibles. Some have joined our team from other roles in the industry, while others were previous hobby shop owners themselves. Nearly all our employees have a story and background with collectibles.

Although various forms of fantasy sports leagues became popularized and more efficiently managed thanks to the advent of the internet, the truth is fantasy sports origins can be traced back to the 1950s. COMC is no stranger to fantasy leagues, as our employees have been eager to pit their sport knowledge against one another in head-to-head fantasy baseball and football leagues over the years.

For the last two years, our employees have developed a clever Pack League concept that sees them not only testing their knowledge of the game, but also their hobby luck as well! For each of the last two football seasons, COMC Office Pack Leagues have been formed. The league predetermines a low-end product that is suitable to be used and each league member purchases a box of the product. Each week, leagues members opens the same number of packs (generally 1-2) and set their weekly lineups using only players found in those packs. The league uses a point based scoring system like weekly fantasy sports, and a winner is determined over the course of the season.

This year, we’re bringing the Pack League concept to Baseball with an 18-week long league using the recently released 2018 Topps Opening Day Baseball. Each week, League Managers will open 2 packs of Opening Day and choose six players (4 hitters, 2 pitchers) within those packs to set their weekly lineup. Trading between Managers will be permitted, but no cards will be carried over from week-to-week.

Players will choose our hitters (2 for per stat category) and two pitchers each week.

Scoring is broken up into three statistical categories:

Batting – Hits (2 cards)
Batting – Home Runs (2 cards)
Pitching – Strike Outs (2 cards)

A single card (player) can only be set to compete in one category. For example, if a Mike Trout card is pulled in a pack, the Manager must decide if they want Trout to compete for hits or for home runs, but not both. If a Manager pulls two Mike Trout cards, they can play one card in each category, or both cards in the same category. At the end of each week, the totals for each team in each category are tallied. The top 3 places in each category earn the following points:

1st – 3 points
2nd – 2 points
3rd – 1 point

(If a tie exists, the tied teams will each take one fewer point for that place and subsequent teams’ places will drop out of the winnings totaling the number of ties.)

Examples:

  • If 2 teams tie for 1st, they will each take 2 points for that category – no 3rdplace will be awarded and 2nd place will take 1 point
  • If 4 teams tie for 1st, they will each take 2 points for that category – no 2ndor 3rd place will be awarded
  • If 2 teams tie for 2nd, they will each take 1 point for that category – no 3rdplace will be awarded
  • If 4 teams tie for 2nd, they will each take 1 point for that category – no 3rdplace will be awarded
  • If 2 teams tie for 1st and 3 teams tie for 2nd, 1st will each take 2 points for that category and 2nd will each take 1 point for that category – no 3rd place will be awarded

*If any teams tie for 3rd, and no other ties exist in that stat category, each team will still take 1 point for that category

At the end of the COMC Baseball Pack League season, the league Manager who earned the most points throughout the season will reign as the 2018 Pack League Champion. We’ll also be awarding the Home Run King, Hit King, and Strikeout King titles to those Managers who dominated each statistical category.

In our next blog update, we’ll run down the list of competitors in this year’s COMC Baseball Pack League and showcase their week one results!

We hope you’ll enjoy following our Baseball Pack League throughout the 2018 baseball season and maybe even get inspired to get together with some friends and form a league of your own.
