The Faces Behind COMC #4 – Getting to Know our Sorting Team

Welcome back to our ongoing series, “The Faces Behind COMC”. In this series, we showcase the personalities of the members of our team responsible for making sure we offer our customer’s the best experience possible when using COMC. In this installment, we’re looking at a team that is built around two of our longest tenured employees who know everything there is to know about the hobby and trading cards. Each and every day, this team observes the tens of thousands of items that pass through COMC’s consignment process, ensuring that buyers have the best possible experience when browsing cards on the COMC Marketplace.

Jade (JVSportscards & Prospect_Watch on COMC)

As the last remaining original COMC Identification Team Member, Jade brings nearly 30 years of card collecting experience to COMC. After Managing the ID Team for 4 years, Jade helped play a pivotal role in the creation of the new COMC Catalog of checklist data that can be found on the site today.  After that project, Jade moved forward to manage the high-end service levels (Premium, Select, and Mailbox Service). Jade is very active in the group breaking community, and researches minor league baseball prospects and high end card market activity in his free time. If there is a question about a modern sports card around COMC, Jade is one of the “go to guys” in our company.

Away from COMC, Jade enjoys spending time with his family, watching sports and playing poker. Jade routinely travels to Las Vegas where he puts his luck to good work. Not only is Jade’s luck with monster hits from products well known around the halls of COMC, but his luck at the slot machines is that of legends if you ask his fellow coworkers.  Jade has sold around 1.5 million cards total from his collection, with about 150k of those being sold on COMC.

The Faces Behind COMC #3 – Getting to Know our Canadian Team

Welcome back to our ongoing series, “The Faces Behind COMC”. In this series, we showcase the personalities of the members of our team responsible for making sure we offer our customer’s the best experience possible when using COMC. This time around, we’re taking our readers up North to get a glimpse inside our Canadian Processing Facility. We opened our Canadian location in January 2013 in an effort to create a more streamlined COMC experience for our Canadian Customers.

Derek (OTCards on COMC)

An avid collector and former sports card shop owner, Derek was a familiar face to our Canadian Team long before officially joining COMC. Derek joined our Processing Team in late 2016, but the majority of the Canadian COMC Team had already been regular customers at his shop many years prior. Joining the COMC Team seemed like a natural transition for the Vancouver born native.

In his spare time away from COMC, he enjoys watching movies and participating in trivia nights at local bars and establishments. Derek also routinely competes in reality TV fantasy leagues with his friends. That all being said, he stays plenty busy buying and selling cards both locally as well as online. He collects mostly non-sports cards such as entertainment autographs, but also enjoys picking up key sports rookie cards when he can.

Verne joined our Canadian Processing Team about two years and has one of the most colorful backstories of any COMC employee. Verne is a former professional wrestler who is still active in the independent scene as a Manager and Agent for All Star Wrestling Inc. In 1991, Verne even had two televised matches for WWF (now WWE) where he competed against the likes of Sgt. Slaughter and The Texas Tornado. A simple google search will reveal pictures, highlights and even youtube videos of some of his matches over the years if you want to learn more!

Born in Victoria, British Columbia, he has resided across Canada. Away from COMC and the squared circle, Verne enjoys staying in shape by working out and doing yoga as well as taking care of his 16-year old Dachshund named Jasper. He collects comic books and wrestling memorabilia as well as hockey cards. He promotes a collectibles show as well.

A true story adding to the legend of Verne, he broke a chair on his first day of work at COMC and autographed the broken leg for our CEO Tim Getsch.

The Vancouver-area native has spent his whole life in the area, and stays active through playing sports such as football and basketball.

Eddie isn’t shy about his skills on the court, and opted to use this blog as a platform to issue a formal one-on-one challenge to Tim Getsch. He would love to step on the court with our CEO, but only on the stipulation that Tim cannot post-up during the contest!

He is the most well-traveled our Canadian Team, having lived in Mexico and the United Kingdom.  He confesses that he does not collect cards as extensively as he previously did in his youth, but he does like to buy cards of young players with lots of potential as well as older hockey and baseball cards that remind him of his youth. He also maintains a collection of old game programs and world currencies no longer in circulation.

Peter shared with us that ins his past he helped run youth camps for many years, primarily in the summer time. He was often involved in helping with organizing sports schedules and led evening music and singing events. He spent four months volunteering in an orphanage in Mexico when he was 20 years old and says that to this day it was one of the most impactful and greatest things he has done in life.

Barry (CPA-CMA) – Manager, COMC Canada

Barry has the distinct honor of being our first Canadian employee as Operations Manager of our Canadian location. After working in the banking industry for 23 years, he became a Chartered Professional Accountant, and now oversees the operation of our Canadian Facility – no small task by any means. He was born in Edmonton (the same home town as Zarley Zalapski) and has also lived in the same hometown as Rene Bourque (we’ll let you Google that one!). He collects cards of Red Wings players as well as other cards that catch his eye.

The Faces Behind COMC #2 – Getting to Know Our Order Fulfillment Team

A few weeks ago we debuted our ‘Faces Behind COMC’ blog series, which offers a detailed and personal look at the individuals at COMC who are tasked with the day-to-day responsibilities of ensuring the satisfaction of every single COMC customer. The response that the first installment received was overwhelming positive, and our team truly appreciated the kind words! In our second look at the COMC Team, we turn focus to our Order Fulfillment Team. Tasked with processing a truly mind blowing amount of shipment requests on a weekly basis (we’ll save the raw statistics for another blog), putting cards in the hands of their owners is a collaborative effort by our Shipping Teams in three different COMC locations. In this blog, we’re focusing on members of our Auburn (WA) Order Fulfillment Team,

Alice Wolfe

Alice recently celebrated her sixth year anniversary with COMC as a member of our Shipping Team and currently serves as our Order Fulfillment Team Assistant Manager. Born and raised in Washington State, Alice collects Nintendo merchandise and is a competitive Super Smash Bros. video game player. At one time, she was considered one of the best Yoshi players in the world in Super Smash Bros. Melee competition.  Alice also collects and plays both the Pokemon Trading Card Game and Magic: The Gathering.

When not at COMC, she can be found raising a pair of bunnies (Nugget and Cocoa) with her partner-in-crime as well as reviewing older movies. One very fun fact about Alice that some of her co-workers might not even be aware of is that she even went to school to become a race car driver.

Favorite Sport: Rally Racing
Favorite Food: Ramen
Favorite Card in Personal Collection: Can’t Pick One.

Alicia Lortz

Having joined the COMC team in November of 2015, Alicia currently helps oversee order fulfillment production as one of our Team Shift Leads. In her time away from COMC, she enjoys cooking and gaming, amassing a collection of classic video game console and games as well as Pokemon and Nintendo merchandise. Her personal card collection includes a lot of older Pokemon cards and she shares a moderation collection of Magic: The Gathering cards with her girlfriend.

Born in Eastern Washington, he is one of the more well-traveled members of our team, having previously lived in Eastern Nebraska and Northern California before returning to settle near COMC. Similar to many members of our Order Fulfillment Team, he is passionate about both playing and collecting the Magic: The Gathering cards.

In his free time, he is avid about spending times outdoors playing Pokemon Go. He also has a small collection of older video games and enjoys playing Super Smash Bros. Some of his hobbies include playing board games, hanging out with friends and getting plenty of sleep.

Cody Hauk

Although some of his fellow co-workers believe he’s not human due to his incredible immune system, we can indeed confirm that Cody is very much human. His passion for his team and for COMC over his four years with the company has led him to the role of Assistant Manager of our Order Fulfillment Team. Born in Flint, Michigan, he spent time in Afghanistan prior to joining the COMC Team.

He has a betta fish and 3 papillon dogs in addition to a Shih-tzu back in Michigan.  Although he jokingly pondered, “What is life without COMC?” when we first inquired, Cody confessed that he enjoys video games, sports, ping pong and billiards when away from the office.
