Check Out Your Cards – April 10th

Hello COMC Nation,

I hope you all enjoyed the special edition we ran last week on April 1st. I had one person tell me it was a literary masterpiece, but as he is related to me, he might be biased. Today we return to the standard format of Check Out Your Cards, our weekly post where I sit down with a member of our staff and talk about some of the great cards they have seen on our site. I spoke to Greg from our ID team. He wanted to share some more fantastic finds, as well as a card mystery that he has been puzzling over for more than a year.

2008-09 Exquisite Collection NBA All Access Triple NBA Logo #TRIP-MBR Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, O.J. Mayo

18009070

The 2008-09 Exquisite cards did not disappoint when it came to showcasing great players. Although O.J. Mayo sounds like two of the ingredients in the worst smoothie ever, the three players on this card were the number 1, 2, and 3 NBA draft picks of 2008. You can see why a card like this would catch Greg’s eye.

2008-09 Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman Autographs #DLOG-NK Jason Kidd, Steve Nash

18202428

Greg has already admitted his bias towards Logoman cards. There’s a real thrill in the quest to own, or even find these cards. On this particular card you have Jason Kidd and Steve Nash, contenders for best point guard to ever play the game. As a side note, I remember the time spent trying to unlock Jason Kidd in NBA Jam TE.

2013-14 Panini Preferred 2013 NBA Finals Memorabilia Booklet Prime #4 LeBron James

15306121We are getting closer to the center of our mystery with this LeBron James card. Being an amazing booklet with a humongous patch, there is just one thing that could make this card better – an autograph. However, you might have noticed that newer LeBron cards will either have him in his uniform, or with a signature, but not both. LeBron has an exclusive contract with Upper Deck, and they are the only ones who are able to have his signature on a licensed card. However, UD is no longer licensed to show NBA uniforms. That is what brings us to the below unicorn of a card, so rare that, even after time spent deep in research, Greg is baffled.

2012-13 Fleer Retro Autographs #NoN LeBron James

13666033

This is a card that should not be. LeBron in a Heat uniform with a signature. While we’re not an authenticating company, that is an amazing autograph. Greg was telling me about how he remembered seeing this card years ago, and when I was telling him about my plan for COYC, he went back on a search for whatever he could find about this card. It came in through our Mailbox service and was shipped out to a very, very lucky fan. If anyone knows more about this card, please email us at staff@comc.com.

Thank you everyone, and have a great weekend!

Check Out Your Cards: Special Edition

A hearty hello to everyone in COMC Nation from NathanCOMC.

No need for a long face, because I’m coming to you with another exciting entry of Check Out Your Cards, our blog post where we sit down with someone special and ask them about some of the fantastic cards we have on our site. This time, however, we got a horse of a different color. Hold on to your reins, folks, because yesterday’s interview left me so excited that I was racing to get this published. It simply would not do to keep this in the gates until Friday. For this edition, I got to horse around with Washington native, famed Triple Crown winner, and noted stallion, Seattle Slew, and talk about our terrific assortment of horse racing cards.

 2008 Sportskings Series B #80 – Seattle Slew (BGS 9.5)

Seattle-Slew

Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I wanted to ask Mr. Slew (as he told me his acquaintances call him) about ranking 9th in Blood-Horse Magazine’s List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century. Mr. Slew whinnied triumphantly and stomped his hooves with joy.

2008 Sportkings Series B Double Memorabilia Silver #DM-09 Seattle Slew, Secretariat

Slew Secretariat

In 1978 Mr. Slew had his first, and only, match up where he was not the favorite to win. While the race was neck and neck, it ended up with Mr. Slew out running Affirmed (another Triple Crown winner) by three lengths. Not only this, be he shaved .40 off the track record set by Secretariat.

2013 Panini Golden Age Box Topper Exhibit #15 – Seabiscuit

Seabiscuit

When I took Mr. Slew to see our warehouse he immediately seemed drawn to this card – so much so that I had to stop him from nibbling the case off. With my horse-whispering expertise I gleaned from this action that Mr. Slew had always admired Seabiscuit. When I asked him if he was the least bit jealous of the several film and book deals that Seabiscuit had, Mr. Slew gave a resounding, “Neigh.”

2012 Sportkings Series E Redemption Quad Memorabilia Premium Back #SKEQM08

Seattle-Slew-Isiah-Thomas-Payne-Stewart-Tito-Ortiz

This was the last card that I got a chance to ask him about before we put him back out to pasture. I wanted to know how he felt being put on a card along with the likes of Isiah Thomas, Payne Stewart, and Tito Ortiz. “I am deeply humbled by people’s desire to own a piece of my maiden silks, and am impossibly glad to be considered worthy of the honor of being immortalized in this manner,” said the ever loquacious steed.
